Chapter Eight

The Chariot

Arrow took a deep breath. That was always how Basil seemed to start magic in the episodes of SpectreWatch. They closed their eyes and tried to imagine they were filling their body with magical power.

They didn’t feel any different.

Digging their nails into their knees, they tried to remember how they’d felt when they’d done the spell the day before. But they couldn’t remember feeling anything special, just… they’d lit candles. Maybe they should light some more candles?

They’d found one candle in their quick tidy of the place, but not the other. They lit it and held it in their cupped hands, feeling very Witch in the movie sense of the word. Like a wind machine was going to start up and tousle their hair, and petals would start circling the room. They suppressed a laugh. Magic wasn’t like that, it was never ruffling Basil’s hair on the show, or making pink lights appear.

They tried to be as serious as they could. Focusing on their intention to end the prosperity spell, to set themself free from it all somehow. They imagined closing off the magic, turning it off like a light switch.

They didn’t feel anything.

Sighing, Arrow opened their eyes and blew out the candle. This clearly wasn’t going to work just because they wanted it to. They needed to learn more.
